How the 3 On 3 Off schedule works

The 3 on 3 off pattern repeats every 6 days: three 12-hour shifts, then three days off. Two day crews (offset by three days) trade the day shift while two night crews do the same, so one day crew and one night crew are on every day. The short blocks mean you are never more than three shifts deep before a break, though days off drift across the week because six does not divide evenly into seven.

Pros

  • Never more than 3 shifts in a row
  • Frequent 3-day breaks
  • Easy to remember
  • Only two handovers a day

Cons

  • Days off drift across the week
  • Weekend work rotates in and out
  • Averages 42h/week, so some weeks run long

Who uses the 3 On 3 Off pattern

Security, hospitals and care settings, utilities, and control rooms that need round-the-clock cover with short, frequent rest blocks.

Make the short 3-on/3-off cycle easy to administer

The pattern is simple on paper, but its six-day cycle moves across the seven-day week. Generate several months before allocating weekend duties, regular meetings, or a recurring customer commitment. This reveals which crew is likely to be on a date rather than assuming the same weekday always belongs to the same group.

Use the three-day work block to set a consistent handover and role check. Each block should have the skills and decision-makers it needs, and every incoming crew should know where open work is recorded. The fact that the cycle repeats quickly does not remove the need for an accountable transition.

Keep leave and swaps visible as exceptions. When several short blocks are edited informally, employees can lose the reference point that tells them which three days are theirs. A dated master calendar prevents that confusion.

Pattern comparison

If you are deciding between nearby options, compare the weekly hours, longest work run, and biggest off block before you standardise the rota.

Pattern Avg hours / week Longest work run Longest off block Fatigue load
3 On 3 Off 42 3 days 3 days Medium
4-on-4-off 42 4 days 4 days Medium
2-2-3 42 3 days 3 days Medium
DuPont 42 4 days 7 days Medium

A shorter longest work run usually feels safer and easier to recover from. A longer off block is better for commute-heavy or remote teams, but often comes with a tougher on block just before it.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a week is 3 on 3 off?

On 12-hour shifts it averages 42 hours a week over the 6-day cycle, alternating heavier and lighter weeks.

Does 3 on 3 off give fixed weekends?

No. Because the cycle is 6 days, your days off shift forward through the week each rotation rather than landing on fixed weekends.
