Each crew has 3 work days and 3 off days per cycle. Scheduled hours are 36 ÷ 6 × 7 = 42 hours per week on average. This cycle average is not an individual workweek total or a payroll calculation.

A crew is a group following the same rotation, not a single employee. The calendar does not calculate how many qualified people each shift needs.

How the 3 On 3 Off schedule works

The 3 on 3 off pattern repeats every 6 days: three 12-hour shifts, then three days off. Two day crews (offset by three days) trade the day shift while two night crews do the same, so one day crew and one night crew are on every day. The short blocks mean you are never more than three shifts deep before a break, though days off drift across the week because six does not divide evenly into seven.

Make the short 3-on/3-off cycle easy to administer

The pattern is simple on paper, but its six-day cycle moves across the seven-day week. Generate several months before allocating weekend duties, regular meetings, or a recurring customer commitment. This reveals which crew is likely to be on a date rather than assuming the same weekday always belongs to the same group.

Use the three-day work block to set a consistent handover and role check. Each block should have the skills and decision-makers it needs, and every incoming crew should know where open work is recorded. The fact that the cycle repeats quickly does not remove the need for an accountable transition.

Keep leave and swaps visible as exceptions. When several short blocks are edited informally, employees can lose the reference point that tells them which three days are theirs. A dated master calendar prevents that confusion.
