How the 4-on-4-off schedule works
The 4-on-4-off repeats every 8 days: four 12-hour shifts, then four full days off. Two day crews (offset by four days) hand the day shift back and forth, and two night crews do the same, so exactly one day crew and one night crew are on every single day. Because the block is short and even, the pattern is easy to memorise and gives a genuine four-day weekend every rotation.
Pros
- Four consecutive days off every cycle
- Very easy to remember
- Balanced — equal work and rest
- Only two handovers a day
Cons
- Four 12-hour shifts in a row is demanding
- Days off drift across the week, not fixed weekends
- Averages ~42h/week, so some weeks run long
Who uses the 4-on-4-off pattern
Widely used by police, fire and ambulance services, oil and gas, manufacturing, warehousing, and private security.
Use the four-day break without losing weekday awareness
An eight-day cycle does not land on the same weekday every time. That is one of its advantages for sharing weekends, but it means managers should generate several months before promising coverage for a public holiday, delivery day, or recurring meeting. Put those dates on the calendar first and decide whether the base rotation can absorb them or needs separately approved cover.
The four consecutive 12-hour shifts are the operational pressure point. Before launch, identify any task that must not be scheduled late in a long run, set a clear handover time, and make sure each shift has the required qualified roles. This page can show the work/off sequence; it cannot determine staffing minimums, rest rules, or local overtime requirements.
Keep the day and night crews distinct unless you have a documented transition plan. Changing the crew assignment every few cycles may distribute shifts differently, but it also changes the reference point employees use to read the calendar. Publish the next change before it takes effect and label it as a transition rather than altering the pattern without explanation.
Pattern comparison
If you are deciding between nearby options, compare the weekly hours, longest work run, and biggest off block before you standardise the rota.
| Pattern | Avg hours / week | Longest work run | Longest off block | Fatigue load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4-on-4-off | 42 | 4 days | 4 days | Medium |
| 2-2-3 | 42 | 3 days | 3 days | Medium |
| DuPont | 42 | 4 days | 7 days | Medium |
| 7 On 7 Off | 42 | 7 days | 7 days | High |
A shorter longest work run usually feels safer and easier to recover from. A longer off block is better for commute-heavy or remote teams, but often comes with a tougher on block just before it.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is 4-on-4-off?
On 12-hour shifts it averages about 42 hours a week — four shifts (48 hours) one week, three (36 hours) the next, across the 8-day cycle.
Do you rotate between days and nights?
It depends on the site. This generator lets you pick a fixed day or night crew; some workplaces rotate crews between day and night blocks every few cycles.
Why does my day off land on a different weekday each time?
An 8-day cycle does not divide evenly into a 7-day week, so your four days off shift forward by one weekday each rotation.
