Each crew has 4 work days and 4 off days per cycle. Scheduled hours are 48 ÷ 8 × 7 = 42 hours per week on average. This cycle average is not an individual workweek total or a payroll calculation.

A crew is a group following the same rotation, not a single employee. The calendar does not calculate how many qualified people each shift needs.

How the 4-on-4-off schedule works

The 4-on-4-off repeats every 8 days: four 12-hour shifts, then four full days off. Two day crews (offset by four days) hand the day shift back and forth, and two night crews do the same, so exactly one day crew and one night crew are on every single day. Because the block is short and even, the pattern is easy to memorise and gives a four-day break every rotation, which does not always include Saturday and Sunday.

Use the four-day break without losing weekday awareness

An eight-day cycle does not land on the same weekday every time. That is one of its advantages for sharing weekends, but it means managers should generate several months before promising coverage for a public holiday, delivery day, or recurring meeting. Put those dates on the calendar first and decide whether the base rotation can absorb them or needs separately approved cover.

The four consecutive 12-hour shifts are the operational pressure point. Before launch, identify any task that must not be scheduled late in a long run, set a clear handover time, and make sure each shift has the required qualified roles. This page can show the work/off sequence; it cannot determine staffing minimums, rest rules, or local overtime requirements.

Keep the day and night crews distinct unless you have a documented transition plan. Changing the crew assignment every few cycles may distribute shifts differently, but it also changes the reference point employees use to read the calendar. Publish the next change before it takes effect and label it as a transition rather than altering the pattern without explanation.
