Rotating Shift Schedule Maker

Spread days, evenings, and nights fairly across the team — auto-fill a rotation, then fine-tune it.

Pick a rotation and Auto-fill to assign each person to a crew (A/B/C/D) on a real pattern — or click any cell to set it by hand (it cycles through your shift types, then Off, then blank). Day-off templates can mark weekends, Sundays, or US federal holidays off for the whole team in one step, and the week-copy tools help you roll a finished 7-day rota forward without re-clicking every cell.

Which shift pattern should rotating teams choose?

If the goal is a repeatable 24/7 rotation, compare how long each pattern runs, how hard it is on fatigue, and how much time off it gives.

PatternCycleShift lengthBest when
2-2-314 days12 hoursBest all-rounder for four-crew 24/7 teams that want frequent breaks and no more than three shifts in a row.
4-on-4-off8 days12 hoursBest when longer uninterrupted blocks off matter more than keeping work stretches short.
DuPont28 days12 hoursBest when a full week off every cycle is a major quality-of-life benefit worth a more complex rotation.

Use the page-level maker above when you want to assign shifts by hand. Use one of the pattern generators when you want a rota that repeats cleanly and is easier to share, print, and explain to the team.

What a rotating shift schedule does

A rotating schedule moves each person through different shifts over a repeating cycle instead of fixing them to one. Teams use it for two reasons: to share the unpopular nights and weekends fairly, and to keep a site covered around the clock without burning out any single crew. The trade-off is that the body handles a fixed routine better than a moving one, so the pattern you pick matters.

Common rotation patterns

The workhorses are 2-2-3 (the Pitman — two on, two off, three on, across a 14-day cycle), 4-on-4-off, the DuPont, and a simple weekly forward rotation. Most are designed to average out to full-time hours over two weeks while covering 24/7. Forward rotation — day, then evening, then night — is easier on sleep than rotating backwards. The rotating shift patterns guide breaks each one down.

Build a rotation here

Set your cycle length in the Days box (14 shows a full Pitman cycle), add your crews, and hit Auto-fill rotation for a starting spread. Then click any cell to adjust — keep an eye on consecutive nights, which are the biggest fatigue risk — and print or export a CSV when it reads right. For two-block cover specifically, use the 12-hour shift maker.

Choose and launch a rotation with a real operational reference point

A rotation begins with an anchor date. Confirm which crew is working which block on a known date, then use that reference consistently in every published calendar. Without it, a 14-day or 28-day pattern can look correct while each crew is offset by the wrong number of days.

Compare patterns using the work your site must cover, not only average hours. Review the longest work run, off blocks, handover frequency, holidays, and the qualified roles needed on each shift. Generate several months before choosing; an eight-day pattern, for example, moves its days off through the week even if the cycle itself is simple.

When changing patterns, announce the transition separately from the recurring calendar. Keep leave, swaps, overtime, and training as named exceptions with an owner. Staff can understand a repeatable base rota when the exceptions are visible instead of silently changing its sequence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best rotating shift pattern?

It depends on your coverage needs, but 2-2-3 (Pitman) and 4-on-4-off are the most popular for 24/7 teams because they average to full-time hours and give frequent long breaks.

Does auto-fill create a rotation?

Yes. Auto-fill lays down a rotating pattern offset per person as a starting point, which you then adjust by hand.

How long should the cycle be?

Match the Days box to your pattern — 14 days for a Pitman or DuPont cycle, 8 days for 4-on-4-off — so the schedule repeats cleanly.
