Southern Swing schedule: a complete 28-day example

This is the preset used by the generator above, with every crew shown side by side. Day 1 is the cycle reference date you enter, not necessarily the first working day for every crew. Day and night labels refer to the date a shift starts.

Hours and days off in this preset

Each crew has 21 work days and 7 off days per cycle. Scheduled hours are 168 ÷ 28 × 7 = 42 hours per week on average. This cycle average is not an individual workweek total or a payroll calculation.

Match this example to your real roster

  1. Compare a known work date with the day, night, and off assignments in the table.
  2. Set the matching cycle reference date and choose your crew in the generator.
  3. Check one full cycle against your existing roster before printing or sharing. Record leave, swaps, and additional cover separately.

A crew is a group following the same rotation, not a single employee. The calendar does not calculate how many qualified people each shift needs.

How the Southern Swing schedule works

The Southern Swing runs a 28-day cycle built from three week-long blocks: seven day shifts, two days off, seven swing (afternoon) shifts, two days off, seven night shifts, then three days off. Each crew works 21 of 28 days on 8-hour shifts, which averages 42 hours a week. Four crews offset by exactly one week keep one crew on days, one on swings, one on nights, and one off every single day of the year. The rotation moves forward — days, then swings, then nights — which is generally easier on sleep than rotating backwards.

Pros

  • 8-hour shifts instead of 12s
  • Forward rotation is easier on sleep than backward
  • A full week on each shift allows some adjustment
  • Three consecutive days off end every cycle

Cons

  • Only two days off between shift changes
  • A full week of nights every month
  • Needs four crews and three handovers a day
  • Days off move through the week

Who uses the Southern Swing pattern

Continuous process industries — chemical plants, refineries, pulp and paper mills, steel and aluminium works, power generation, water treatment — and any 24/7 operation that prefers three 8-hour shifts to two 12s.

Plan the Southern Swing around the two-day shift change

The defining pressure point in this rotation is not the week of nights, it is the two days off that separate one shift type from the next. A crew finishing seven day shifts has two days to move its sleep forward before starting swings. Treat those transition days as part of the schedule rather than as ordinary rest, and avoid placing training, overtime, or mandatory meetings on them where the operation allows a choice.

Confirm the cycle reference date before publishing anything. Because four crews sit exactly one week apart, an incorrect start date produces a calendar that still looks internally consistent while putting every crew on the wrong shift. Check one known work date for one known crew against the full cycle table, then generate forward.

Verify the role mix on each of the three shifts, not just the headcount. Swing and night shifts often run with fewer support functions available, so confirm the qualified lead, escalation contact, and any specialist capability are present on all three. Record relief and swap decisions on one dated master calendar.

Pattern comparison

If you are deciding between nearby options, compare the weekly hours, longest work run, and biggest off block before you standardise the rota.

Pattern Avg hours / week Longest work run Longest off block Day/night arrangement
Southern Swing 42 7 days 3 days Rotates days and nights
Continental 42 7 days 3 days Rotates days and nights
DDNNOO 56 4 days 2 days Rotates days and nights
2-2-3 42 3 days 3 days Fixed shift per crew

Figures describe the presets on this site, including runs across the cycle boundary. Weekly hours are cycle averages; actual workweek totals vary with the reference date. Compare the shift sequence and required coverage, not just the length of the break.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Southern Swing shift schedule?

It is a 28-day, four-crew rotation of 8-hour shifts. Each crew works seven days, takes two off, works seven swing shifts, takes two off, works seven nights, then takes three off. Over the cycle that is 21 work days and an average of 42 hours a week.

How many hours a week is the Southern Swing?

42 hours on average. Each crew works 21 eight-hour shifts in the 28-day cycle, which is 168 hours over four weeks. That is a cycle average, not a payroll calculation or an individual workweek total.

Does the Southern Swing rotate forward or backward?

Forward. Crews move from days to swings to nights, which shifts sleep later each time and is generally easier to adapt to than a backward rotation.

How is the Southern Swing different from 2-2-3?

Southern Swing uses three 8-hour shifts and rotates each crew through all three over a 28-day cycle. The 2-2-3 uses two 12-hour shifts, usually keeps crews fixed on days or nights, and repeats every 14 days.
