Continental schedule: a complete 28-day example

This is the preset used by the generator above, with every crew shown side by side. Day 1 is the cycle reference date you enter, not necessarily the first working day for every crew. Day and night labels refer to the date a shift starts.

Hours and days off in this preset

Each crew has 21 work days and 7 off days per cycle. Scheduled hours are 168 ÷ 28 × 7 = 42 hours per week on average. This cycle average is not an individual workweek total or a payroll calculation.

Match this example to your real roster

  1. Compare a known work date with the day, night, and off assignments in the table.
  2. Set the matching cycle reference date and choose your crew in the generator.
  3. Check one full cycle against your existing roster before printing or sharing. Record leave, swaps, and additional cover separately.

A crew is a group following the same rotation, not a single employee. The calendar does not calculate how many qualified people each shift needs.

How the Continental schedule works

The continental shift pattern spreads three 8-hour shifts across a 28-day cycle in short blocks: two days, two swings, three nights, two off; then two days, three swings, two nights, two off; then three days, two swings, two nights, three off. Each crew works 21 of 28 days for an average of 42 hours a week. Four crews offset by one week fill all three shifts plus a rest slot every day. Because no block runs longer than three shifts, crews never spend a full week on nights, but they change shift type far more often than on a slower rotation such as the Southern Swing.

Pros

  • Never more than three shifts of one type in a row
  • Short, frequent breaks throughout the cycle
  • 8-hour shifts rather than 12s
  • Three consecutive days off end the cycle

Cons

  • Frequent shift changes are hard on sleep
  • Only two days off between most blocks
  • Needs four crews and three handovers a day
  • The 28-day cycle takes practice to read

Who uses the Continental pattern

Widely used in European and UK manufacturing, automotive plants, logistics and distribution hubs, utilities, and process industries that run continuously on 8-hour shifts.

Read the continental cycle as three distinct weeks

The blocks in this pattern are deliberately uneven — three nights in the first week, three swings in the second, three days in the third — so no two weeks of the cycle look alike. Generate the whole 28 days before assigning recurring meetings, training, or maintenance windows. Reasoning from a single week will place work on a crew that is not actually available.

Because crews change shift type every two or three days, the handover process carries more weight here than on a slower rotation. State where open work, equipment status, and incident detail are recorded, and who confirms receipt at each of the three daily changeovers. Frequent rotation multiplies the cost of an informal handoff.

Watch the short turnarounds. Moving from a night block to a day block after two days off leaves limited recovery, and this happens repeatedly within one cycle. Review the sequence against the rest requirements that apply to your workplace and agreement before adopting it, and keep any approved exception visible on the published calendar.

Pattern comparison

If you are deciding between nearby options, compare the weekly hours, longest work run, and biggest off block before you standardise the rota.

Pattern Avg hours / week Longest work run Longest off block Day/night arrangement
Continental 42 7 days 3 days Rotates days and nights
Southern Swing 42 7 days 3 days Rotates days and nights
DDNNOO 56 4 days 2 days Rotates days and nights
4-on-4-off 42 4 days 4 days Fixed shift per crew

Figures describe the presets on this site, including runs across the cycle boundary. Weekly hours are cycle averages; actual workweek totals vary with the reference date. Compare the shift sequence and required coverage, not just the length of the break.

Frequently asked questions

What is a continental shift pattern?

A continuous 24/7 rotation that moves four crews through 8-hour day, swing, and night shifts in short blocks over a 28-day cycle. Each crew works 21 of the 28 days, averaging 42 hours a week.

How many hours a week is a continental shift?

42 hours on average — 21 eight-hour shifts across four weeks, or 168 hours per cycle. This is a cycle average, not a payroll figure or an individual workweek total.

What is the difference between continental and Southern Swing?

Both are 28-day, four-crew, 8-hour rotations averaging 42 hours a week. Southern Swing keeps a crew on one shift type for a full week; the continental pattern uses blocks of two or three shifts, so crews change type more often but never work a whole week of nights.

Is the continental pattern the same as a continental rota?

Yes. Continental shift pattern, continental rota, continental shift system, and continental schedule all describe the same family of fast-rotating 8-hour, four-crew, 24/7 rotations.
